In the fall of 1983, I got in my
little red VW bug and drove myself all over the
South, ten cities in fourteen days, to do
readings from my first book of poems, The Sound
of One Fork. I performed in the homes of lesbians
in Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis, Tennessee;
at a conference on violence against women in
Little Rock, and at a womens cultural
center in Fayetteville, Arkansas; at an MCC
church in Jackson, Mississippi; at an abortion
clinic in New Orleans; for college students in
English and Womens Studies at universities
in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and at the
first womens bookstore in Birmingham.
This trip was the beginning of my travels as a
writer who believes that words can help get us
ready to change the world.
And Im still on the road with my work. Over
the years Ive done readings and spoken at
universities and conferences, Pride celebrations
and political rallies. Below you can see a
partial list of some of the places I performed
during the last two years.
